About First by Reflection
This is a place for essays about learning through reflection.
I write about making, software, architecture, systems, experimentation, and judgment: how we turn ideas into things, what those things reveal, and how we learn to see more clearly through the work of making and studying them.
The current series begins with AI-assisted software development. The larger interest is enduring: how new tools change what we can make, and how reflection helps us learn to use them well.
Why the name
The name comes from a line commonly attributed to Confucius:
“By three methods may we learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third, by experience, which is the bitterest.”
The familiar English wording is best treated as a later attribution or paraphrase, rather than a verified quotation from the Analects. The thought still names something useful. Experience and imitation give us material; reflection is where it becomes understanding.
About the author
I’m Antonio Yon. I work across software engineering, enterprise architecture, and AI-assisted development. I’m interested in the practical and human work of building systems that people can understand, use, maintain, and revise.
I publish occasionally, when an idea has earned time to be worked through. This is not a news feed or a hot-take stream.
